Your Writing Called… It Wants More Energy

Want an easy way to make your writing more exciting?

Use active voice, not passive voice.

In other words, start your sentences with the person doing the action, not the person receiving the action.

• Active voice = subject + verb + object
  • I ate the quiche.
• Passive voice = object + verb + subject
  • The quiche was eaten by me.

Using active voice makes your copy more clear, concise, and compelling.

Here’s proof:

✅ You will cherish these photos forever. 
❌ These photos will be cherished by you forever.

✅ My grandpa invented cottage cheese.
❌ Cottage cheese was invented by my grandpa.

You should use passive voice only when:

• You don’t know the subject
  • The cookies were stolen off the counter.
• You want to place more emphasis on the object than the subject
  • Amendment Z was enacted into law.

In general… it’s time to activate your active voice.
