We’ve all gotten those emails that start with: “I hope this email finds you well.”
And let’s be honest… we’ve probably sent them too.
But email pleasantries like “hope you’re well” aren’t just unnecessary — they might be holding you back from real connection and clarity.
Here’s why.

How many times have you received an email that started like this?
There’s nothing inherently wrong with these introductions…
Except that they’re bland. And cold. And very ChatGPT-y.
How about starting with whatever it is you’re actually emailing about?
I get it — skipping straight to the subject might seem abrupt. (Trust me, as a Midwestern woman who loves to lead with niceties, I get it.)
But this is email, not the line at your local coffee shop.
You don’t have to cushion your message with pleasantries. Small talk doesn’t even make sense on email, where back-and-forth convos are difficult.
I’m not saying you can’t start an email with a kind comment. I’m just saying you don’t have to do so all the time. Especially with a boilerplate comment like “I hope you’re well.”
Instead, say something personal, such as:
…Or don’t say anything, and just ask for whatever it is you need.
Bottom line: Your reader knows you hope they are well. What they don’t know is why you’re emailing them. So get right into it!
